What I Wish Every Parent Knew About the College Process
As a college counselor and a parent myself, I’ve sat in both seats.
I know what it’s like to want the best for your child and still feel overwhelmed by all the options, deadlines, opinions, and unspoken pressure.
Over the years, I’ve worked with families from all types of schools and all types of students—high achievers, late bloomers, neurodivergent learners, first-gen students, and kids still figuring it out.
Here’s what I wish every parent knew, no matter where their child stands:
1. Starting early doesn’t mean adding pressure. It means easing it.
The idea isn’t to pile on college stress in 10th or 11th grade. It’s to break the process into smaller, manageable steps so that senior year doesn’t feel like a sprint with no training.
Early planning gives students the chance to explore, reflect, and revise without the clock running out.
2. You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing.
Every student has their own timeline. Their own voice. Their own story.
The student who takes longer to find their footing might still shine in their essay.
The teen with a “B” average might thrive in a program that offers hands-on experience.
The quiet kid might be the one who writes the most powerful personal statement.
Your child’s process does not need to look like anyone else’s.
3. It’s okay not to know what you’re doing.
There’s no shame in asking for help. The college landscape changes constantly, and even seasoned parents often feel confused.
Working with a professional means having a roadmap. Someone to help make sense of what matters, and how to focus your energy. It also means fewer arguments at home and more moments of clarity and collaboration.
4. There’s more than one path to success.
Not every student ends up at a brand-name school—and that’s not a failure.
Some find their home at smaller colleges, regional campuses, or universities you may never have heard of—but that offer the exact major, mentorship, and support they need.
The best-fit college isn’t always the one with the lowest admit rate.
It’s the one where your student will feel seen, challenged, and supported.
